To do this, we offer strategic organizational and development analysis and planning services, as well as a variety of services related to fundraising and development including development training, messaging and branding assistance, creation of donor-oriented materials and solicitations, donor prospect research, and direct mail program management, among others. More information is available at www.americanphilanthropic.com.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
As a senior consultant at American Philanthropic, you will be responsible for leading project management support for multiple ongoing client engagements, assisting with business development, and helping to manage other American Philanthropic employees. You will work with other members of the American Philanthropic staff and with contractors to ensure that the firm continues to meet a high standard of excellence in serving its clients and fulfilling its obligations.

The sort of work in which you may be engaged includes:

Client Deliverables and Consulting
  • Supporting the creation of strategic organizational, development, and communications plans;
  • Advising on client messaging and assisting with the creation of client collateral material;
  • Consulting generally and regularly with clients on a wide range of management, development, institutional-advancement programs, and communications projects and issues;
  • Executing development-related audits, analysis, and research;
  • Assisting with business development tasks, including proposal development and current client cultivation;
  • Reviewing, editing, and/or writing grant proposals, solicitation letters, and other documents;
  • Coordinating research of qualified donor prospects; and
  • Editing, proof-reading, and other communications-related tasks, as needed.

Client Communications and Project Management
  • Taking the lead in planning meetings;
  • Tracking client deliverables and ensuring their timely delivery;
  • Managing tracking sheets, development calendars, moves management, and other planning tools for both internal and external use;
  • Coordinating with internal and external parties such as researchers, designers, mail-houses, printers, etc., as needed; and
  • Sending monthly client reports.

Administrative and Other Tasks
  • Assisting with other administrative tasks;
  • Representing the firm at client meetings, conferences, seminars, and other events;
  • Assisting with the performance of other company-related tasks, as needed.

You do not need experience in each of these areas in order to apply. Ideally, you will be located near one of American Philanthropic’s offices, but a remote position may be considered for exceptional candidates. You should be willing to spend 4–6 days per month in travel, depending on client needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:
You should have 5+ years of professional experience, including some time spent in nonprofit development or programs or foundation operations. Liberal arts background preferred. You should have a portfolio that demonstrates keen intelligence, strong organization and project management skills, success in managing multiple projects simultaneously, a high degree of personal initiative and conscientiousness, and superb interpersonal skills.

You must take personal ownership of projects and be passionate about helping our clients succeed. Ideally, you will be a generalist who can adapt quickly to new situations and bring intellectual order out of sometimes ambiguous and opaque information environments. Familiarity with research tools such as Wealth Engine, iWave, and Foundation Directory, as well as Salesforce, is a plus, but not expected.
In addition, you should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the American Philanthropic mission of strengthening society’s “little platoons”—the independent mediating institutions and voluntary associations that constitute civil society and are vital to human flourishing. And you should be enthusiastic about the opportunity to help build a fast-growing consulting and services firm into a major force in the philanthropic sphere.

To excel and advance at American Philanthropic over time, you would need to demonstrate:
  • Strong communication and collegiality, as well as a capacity to build personal relationships of trust and respect both with clients and colleagues;
  • An exceptional ability to multi-task, effectively managing many competing deadlines and client priorities with a high degree of prudence and conscientiousness;
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills, as demonstrated by consistently thorough and thoughtful execution of client work;
  • Capacity to take personal ownership of projects, accomplish tasks, and manage up to other colleagues;
  • A strong work ethic, humble manner, and demonstrated willingness to go above and beyond when necessary; and
  • An effective contribution to company culture, exhibiting an attitude both internally and externally that supports American Philanthropic’s development as a company that values practical wisdom, excellence, integrity, hard work, and conviviality.
