During my summer internship at Engaged Media, Inc. I wrote articles for magazines like Cottages & Bungalows Magazine and American Farmhouse Style magazine. As a senior news editor on The GW Hatchet, I write and edit news stories basically every hour of my life, so writing more design-focused articles was fun. I could actually use adjectives! I also honed my feature writing skills, which is something I don't have much room to exercise in the hard news realm.
What I wish was different
I think I would have liked to see more of the editorial process. I generally received positive feedback on the drafts I turned in, which at face value sounds arrogant, but I'm sure my editors tweaked a few words or sometimes might have wanted me to approach an article with a different lens. However, I'm writing this as an afterthought, and if I had asked to sit down with one of my editors while they read a piece I wrote I'm sure they would have obliged.
Advice
My fellow interns were extremely fun to work with and my editors unconditionally provided guidance whenever I asked. They value people who can work independently and stick to deadlines, so make sure you're organized. But if you ever have a question, you should be afraid to ask for help.
