Staff Relations Intern

June - August 2019 • Calabasas, CA

What I liked

The Cheesecake Factory internship program was the funnest internship I could have ever experienced. The best part was that there were 15 other interns - each from a different department. We all had the opportunity to work together, learn from one another, and coordinate events together. This internship isn’t one of those typical mail room and coffee run type of internships. They made sure we all had something valuable to take away from our experience. 10/10 would recommend!

What I wish was different

They don’t really make offers to interns unless they have a position open. Only one person out of 16 interns was able to secure a job because someone in her department found a new job. Other then that, you just have to wait for an opening and apply. Luckily, interns probably have a higher chance of being considered for the position over people who haven’t worked for the company before.

Advice

If you get this internship during your graduating year, it will increase your chances of getting an offer (if they have any openings).

Dining Room Host/Hostess

July - August 2018 • Marina del Rey, CA

What I liked

Working at the Cheesecake Factory was a wake-up call. I learned so many valuable skills that I never knew I’d been slacking on such as: conflict management, prioritizing, multitasking, providing excellent customer service, being solution oriented, etc. The hours were flexible, the management was friendly and the pay was great. I enjoyed the location and how much Cheesecake prides itself on being one of the top restaurants. Training was excellent as well, I felt well equipped to do my job and could always go to someone if I had questions.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given the opportunity to work here earlier on in the summer. I only applied to internships instead of actual summer jobs and was missing out on a great pay scale and experience. As far as the company itself goes, I was on my feet all day and the job itself was high-stress; For me, that was a lot to handle at times. Also, I often had to do things that were outside of my job description like cleaning restrooms and other physical work.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to take a summer job. We often get so focused on interning at the “perfect company” that we could miss other great opportunities. Taking time off from work, studying abroad and volunteering are other great summer break options - not everything valuable has to have the label “internship.”
